Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), founded in 1952, operates under the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) with a core mission to ensure the safety, security, and effectiveness of the U.S. nuclear deterrent. Robotics work at the lab serves this mission and adjacent national security domains, including counterterrorism and nonproliferation, defense and intelligence, and energy and environmental security. Engineering teams develop and deploy autonomous and semi-autonomous systems for environments where human access is constrained by radiological, chemical, or structural hazards.
Technical efforts span manipulation, perception, and mobility systems integrated into facilities and field operations. Hardware-software integration is a primary constraint - systems must operate reliably in facilities with legacy infrastructure and in unstructured outdoor environments. The lab's robotics work draws on multidisciplinary teams that combine mechanical engineering, controls, computer vision, and machine learning to address problems in nuclear stockpile maintenance, threat reduction, and facility security.
LLNL achieved fusion ignition in 2022 at the National Ignition Facility, a milestone that reflects the scale and ambition of its experimental engineering programs. Robotics engineers at the lab contribute to systems that support large-scale experimental diagnostics, remote handling, and autonomous inspection across multiple national security mission areas. Work is conducted in a classified and unclassified environment depending on project requirements.
