California Institute Of Technology Jet Propulsion Laboratory

About

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), managed by the California Institute of Technology for NASA, is a federally funded research and development center headquartered in Pasadena, California. Founded in 1958, JPL designs, builds, and operates robotic spacecraft and instruments for solar system exploration and Earth observation. The laboratory employs over 10,000 people across multiple facilities in the United States.

JPL's robotics work spans autonomous navigation, robotic manipulation, mobility systems, and mission operations for platforms operating in environments ranging from low-Earth orbit to the surfaces of Mars and beyond. The laboratory has delivered mission-critical systems for programs including the Apollo Moon landings, the International Space Station, the James Webb Space Telescope, and the Artemis program. Engineering teams handle the full stack - from radiation-hardened flight electronics and mechanical subsystems through ground software, telecommunications, and mission planning.

Current and past robotic exploration efforts include Mars rovers and landers, deep-space orbiters, and Earth-observing satellites. JPL engineers work within constraints characteristic of spaceflight: limited power and mass budgets, long communication latencies, extreme thermal and radiation environments, and the inability to perform hardware repairs post-deployment. The lab's technical domains encompass robotic exploration, human spaceflight support, aeronautics research, and Earth science.
