Mechatronics Development Engineer

On-siteFull timeMid-level

Trondheim, Trøndelag, Norway · Posted 4 hr. ago

Alva is hiring multiple engineers to strengthen our FiberPrinting™ team - the people behind designing, building, and testing our line of FiberPrinters: advanced, custom-built machines that produce the stators used in Alva motors. FiberPrinting™ is what allows Alva to make some of the thinnest motors in the world.

You’ll be working with the core technology Alva is built on. This is a highly interdisciplinary role blending different fields of engineering. You’ll join a hands-on team that thrives on rapid prototyping, open collaboration, and continuous learning. We emphasize early prototyping and practical testing to validate ideas and guide development. This allows us to identify challenges early and refine solutions before committing to detailed designs. Learn more about FiberPrinting™ here:https://www.alvaindustries.com/technology-provider/fiberprinting

Working in our small team means:
  1. You take ideas from concept to reality

  2. You’ll split your time between desk work and workshop time - doing experiments, building machines, assisting production, and more

  3. You won’t hand a design over to another department and never see it again - you get to follow it all the way into operation

  4. Minimal admin and meetings → more time spent building

If this way of working resonates with you, we encourage you to apply.

Strengths we're looking for

We're hiring multiple engineers with different backgrounds and strengths. Experience in any of the areas below could make you a good fit.

  • Proven ability to develop, build, and test technical solutions

  • Strong experience in one of the following: mechanical design, mechatronics, automation, software development

  • Hands-on experience with machinery, whether it's production equipment, cars, motorcycles, 3D-printers, CNC machines, etc.

  • Experience in one or more of these areas: 3D-CAD, software development, machine vision, automated manufacturing, or industrialization

  • Comfortable working with complex technical problems

This is an on-site position in Trondheim as you need daily access to our workshop and production facilities.

Team responsibilities

The areas below describe what we cover as a team, not what we expect every individual to cover. Your position will be tailored to your strengths.

Software development, machine vision and machine learning
  • Design, build, and test custom machine vision applications.

  • Create custom datasets to train and validate machine learning models using available tools.

  • Develop and iterate the physical systems alongside the software to optimize the solutions.

  • Communicate and demonstrate the possibilities and limitations of different methods.

  • Apply these solutions to the production floor, enabling inline measurements, process monitoring, and defect detection during stator production.

Designing, building and testing machines
  • Design mechanical systems and components - from minor upgrades to entirely new production machines.

  • Take ideas from whiteboard sketches to working prototypes, building and testing them in our workshop.

  • Develop prototypes into reliable production machines as Alva scales manufacturing.

  • Develop and improve automation, motion control, and machine integration.

  • Investigate and improve machine stability, performance, and reliability.

  • Troubleshoot and improve existing machines and production processes.

What we offer

  • A rare opportunity to grow fast as an engineer across multiple disciplines - working closely with experts at the forefront of motor design and manufacturing

  • A key role in a small, fast-paced engineering team, contributing to the machines and the technology behind our products

  • A collaborative culture that values initiative, transparency, and continuous learning

  • A truly international work environment with colleagues from around the world
