Non-profit ocean research and engineering institution, founded 1930, building underwater vehicles, ocean observatories, and marine instruments, and operating research vessels from coastal waters to the deep sea.
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is a non-profit ocean research and education organization founded in 1930, based in the United States and operating across the global oceans from coastal waters to the deepest depths. Robotics work at WHOI centers on underwater vehicles and ocean observatory systems: autonomous and remotely operated vehicles built for deep-ocean exploration and data collection, and sustained observatory infrastructure for continuous measurement. The engineering scope spans marine engineering, instrument development, and the integration of sensing, autonomy, and deployment systems that must function under pressure, corrosion, and limited communication bandwidth.
Deployment is a core constraint rather than an afterthought. WHOI operates its own research vessels, so vehicle and instrument development is coupled directly to at-sea operations - hardware, software, and shipboard systems are validated in the field, from shelf waters to hadal depths. When existing tools cannot meet the requirements of a science mission, the institution develops new technology in-house, covering domains including deep-sea exploration, ocean acidification research, marine ecosystem science, and climate science.
WHOI also runs academic and training programs that give students and early-career engineers access to research facilities and ship time. The institution describes itself as a community of scientists, engineers, and explorers, with a stated mission of strengthening American leadership in ocean science and supporting coastal community resilience, marine resource protection, and the sustainable blue economy.
