Mercado Libre
Mexico, MX
Mercado Libre operates Latin America's e-commerce marketplace and Mercado Pago fintech division, supporting buying, selling, payments, credit, and shipping across 18 countries.
Mercado Libre runs the logistics and shipping networks that moved 2.7 billion items in the last twelve months across 18 countries in Latin America. That physical throughput sits on top of the company's commerce and payments stack: the Mercado Libre marketplace, with 126 million unique buyers and 83 million monthly active users, and Mercado Pago, the fintech division handling payment processing, digital accounts, credit, and insurance. Engineering work spans e-commerce marketplace platforms, digital payments and fintech, logistics and shipping networks, digital credit and financing, and digital accounts and insurance.
Founded in 1999 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, by Marcos Galperin, the company began as a consumer-to-consumer marketplace for pre-owned goods modeled on eBay and has since expanded into a full commerce and financial services infrastructure for the region. It now employs over 123,000 people and has operated for 25 years, growing into one of the most valuable companies in Latin America by market capitalization.
The operating envelope is regional and heterogeneous: fulfillment, shipping, and payments have to work across 18 countries with different infrastructure, regulation, and last-mile conditions. The stated mission is to democratize commerce and financial services across Latin America; the engineering problems that follow from it are the scale of a marketplace serving millions of buyers and sellers alongside a payments and credit business that has to settle, finance, and insure reliably at that same volume.
