Brumby

Brumby builds autonomous drones and AI that muster, locate, count, and monitor cattle from purpose-built docks, with offline-capable base-station software for remote rangeland stations.

Brumby develops autonomous aerial systems for cattle graziers. A purpose-built dock launches drones that fly scheduled missions over paddocks, position themselves around herds, and guide animals toward designated areas using gentle, AI-directed pressure - replacing mustering work traditionally done with helicopters and motorbikes. The technical stack spans autonomous UAV navigation and path planning, computer vision for animal detection, counting, and tracking, remote sensing analytics, and autonomous docking infrastructure.

Beyond mustering, the system locates and counts every animal in a paddock automatically and runs scheduled inspection missions over water troughs, tanks, and fences, flagging issues early. It also measures standing dry-matter pasture biomass from the air, producing data graziers use to time cattle rotation and choose where to graze next. The operational constraint shaping much of the software is connectivity: rangeland environments are remote, so the Brumby smartphone app runs either online or in a local base-station mode with edge computing on site and no external connectivity required.

Founded in 2025, Brumby is part of the Y Combinator W2026 cohort with investor backing and is based in Australia, with an initial focus on North Queensland cattle stations and an ambition to serve international cattle producers. The founding team brings direct domain experience - founder Sam grew up managing 6,000 head on a North Queensland cattle station - and the product design targets the cost of mustering operations, which producers commonly run at tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. The company frames its work as "robot cowboys": applying robotics and AI to reduce animal stress and manual labor in grazing operations.
