Thorlabs

Thorlabs designs and manufactures photonics products - optics, optomechanics, precision motion control, fiber optics, light sources, and imaging systems - for scientific research and product development.

Thorlabs develops and manufactures photonics technologies for scientific research and product development. Founded in 1989 by Alex Cable, a former Bell Labs engineer, the company is headquartered in Newton, New Jersey, and employs more than 3,000 people across operations in nine countries: the United States, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Its catalog exceeds 20,000 products spanning optics, optomechanics, fiber optics, light sources, light analysis instruments, imaging systems, and microscopy.

For robotics engineers, the relevant surface is the precision motion control and optomechanics lines: stages, actuators, and mounting hardware built for repeatable positioning in optical setups and instrumentation. These are integrated with imaging systems used in research, manufacturing, and biomedical applications, where mechanical stability, alignment tolerances, and closed-loop control determine whether an optical measurement holds up outside the lab. The ASOM microscope, which earned the Laser Focus World Innovation Award, is one example of the company's in-house instrument development.

Thorlabs runs vertically integrated manufacturing, meaning many components and subsystems are fabricated internally rather than sourced as finished assemblies. Growth has come through a mix of organic expansion and acquisitions, and the company remained in operation through market downturns including the early 2000s telecom collapse. The stated focus across product lines is accelerating scientific research and product development for customers in scientific research, manufacturing, biomedical, and optical equipment fields.
