Rivian builds emission-free electric trucks, SUVs, and vans on a software-defined vehicle platform with OTA updates, battery lifecycle design, and its own charging network in the United States.
Rivian is an American electric vehicle manufacturer building emission-free Electric Adventure Vehicles - trucks, SUVs, and vans. For robotics and autonomy-adjacent engineers, the relevant architecture is the company's software-defined vehicle platform: vehicles are designed to evolve after delivery through over-the-air software updates, which pushes engineering work toward a hardware/software split where the vehicle's compute and control functions can be revised continuously rather than frozen at build time.
Technical work spans electric vehicle manufacturing, software-defined vehicle design, over-the-air update systems, battery pack design and recycling, battery second-life applications, sustainable materials engineering, and charging infrastructure. Battery packs are designed to be removed for recycling or redeployed in second-life applications, a lifecycle constraint that shapes pack mechanical and electrical design rather than treating end-of-life as an afterthought. Rivian also operates its own network of charging stations alongside offices, test labs, experience centers, service centers, and manufacturing sites, all in the United States.
Materials and climate targets are set explicitly: vehicle interiors use 100% animal-free materials, and the company has signed the Climate Pledge to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 - ten years ahead of the Paris Agreement. The design ethos is stated as "Keep the world adventurous forever," applied through lifecycle-aware engineering and an outdoor-adventure use case for the vehicles.
