Position Overview

The role of a mechatronics engineer sits at the intersection of electronics, mechanical engineering and automation, keeping espresso machines and grinders running reliably while also shaping new custom builds.

Key tasks and responsibilities

  • Assesses the feasibility, componentry cost and performance of new cart and machine configurations before committing to a build by bench-testing prototypes, trialling alternative pumps, boilers or control components, and recommending design or cost changes.
  • Produce CAD designs and technical drawings for custom coffee carts and bespoke machine configurations.
  • Design the pneumatic, hydraulic (water/steam) and control-system layout for each build, selecting boilers, pumps, valves and electronic controllers to meet the specification.
  • Develop and track a project schedule for each build or refurbishment job (e.g. using Gantt charts) against cost and delivery targets.
  • Select, install and wire electronic control components such as pressure stats, solenoids, PID/temperature controllers, flow meters for new builds and full machine refurbishments.
  • Program and calibrate control systems to achieve target brew temperature, boiler pressure and steam performance.
  • Diagnose and repair faults in the electronic and mechanical systems of machines brought in for service or repair.
  • Operate and program the CNC router/edge bander to produce cart panels and componentry to the design specification.
  • Oversee assembly of custom coffee carts and rebuilt machines, including plumbing, electrical wiring and panel fitting.
  • Coordinate with the powder-coating and fabrication stages of the refurbishment process to ensure components meet design tolerances.
  • Bench-test every rebuilt or newly built unit - calibrate brew temperature and boiler pressure, test solenoids, flow rates and back pressure, and verify pump performance.
  • Carry out pressure and leak testing under load and final pre-delivery quality checks before a machine or cart is shipped or installed.
  • Evaluate new componentry (pumps, boilers, control systems) for cost, reliability and performance before adopting it into CME's builds.
  • Prepare cost estimates and budgets for custom builds and larger refurbishment jobs.
  • Recommend design or process improvements to reduce cost, waste or turnaround time across the workshop.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors’ or higher qualification in Engineering
  • Minimum one year of relevant work experience
  • Product design, development and testing; automation
